Google Maps is rolling out a new feature for users to stay updated with local businesses.
Users can now follow businesses directly within the Google Maps app, similar to following pages on social media platforms.
Once a user follows a business, they will start receiving the latest updates in the “For you” tab. The updates may include events, offers, and other news.
“Ever wandered by your favorite store just to find out you missed a great sale? Or maybe you’re always the last of your friends to find out about the new hot spots opening in town…
Android users can now follow places directly from the app. This feature is rolling out now; just search for that beloved coffee shop or that clothing store you’ve been wanting to visit, and tap the “Follow” button.”
As the announcement states, this feature is currently available only on Android devices.
There was no mention of whether the feature will be made available to iOS users. However, it’s not uncommon for Google to release new features on its own operating system first.
### Listings for Places “Coming Soon”
In another update to Google Maps, users will soon have the ability to connect with new businesses before they officially open.
Businesses that are set to open soon can create a free Business Profile that will appear to users up to 3 months prior to their official opening.
These locations will be indicated with an opening date in orange text.
This feature is rolling out over the next few weeks.
Businesses interested in showing their upcoming locations on Maps and Search can start by claiming their Google My Business listing.
